As a fan of Wilbur Smith I absolutely loved this novel. What Smith has done for Africa Bill Swiggs has done for Australia. He has captured the atmosphere of colonial Australia and the tremendous stresses and strains the miners were under.

As the main protagonists, Toby and Paddy immediately capture your emotions and you are totally caught up in the ups and downs of fate that they experience. Not only that but you really care about them and the supporting characters - all of whom you are more than happy to invest your time with.

From a historical standpoint, not knowing an awful lot about early Australia, I was also intrigued by the lifestyle and the hardships that were encountered in the outback - a real eye opener.

All in all, a brilliant book - one I would thoroughly recommend especially to fans of Wilbur Smith but also to anyone interested in a good adventure.
