Cassandra (Cassie) Raven is a mortuary technician who treats her charges all with great care, still seeing them as people rather than just bodies. She talks to them like they are still sentient beings; and, at times, she feels like they talk back - giving her hints as to what may have caused their deaths.

One day, Cassie unzips a body bag ready to prep for a post mortem when she discovers in it her beloved science teacher, Geraldine Edwards. The pathologist concludes that Mrs Edwards’ death was an accident, but Cassie is unconvinced, and believes that Mrs E (as Cassie refers to her) is trying to tell her differently.

Cassie then starts to investigate the circumstances surrounding Mrs E’s death in order to try and find some clues that will convince the police to investigate the death as suspicious.

Cassie is the main character in this novel and most of the book is written from her point of view; but we are also introduced to DS Phyllida Flyte, with occasional parts written from her viewpoint. I think that they make a great pairing - they don’t exactly see eye-to-eye, and they aren’t from the same worlds.

Having made Cassie a mortuary technician, A. K. Turner hasn’t spared on the details, giving the story more authenticity. In the acknowledgements the author alludes to a series of novels…I’m looking forward to joining Cassie on her next mystery solving journey. A recommended read, especially if you like forensic pathology type crime novels, like Patricia Cornwell's.
