I set out with high hopes of this, I loved James Herriott and thought it might be similar and yes there was some light relief and some very funny stories.
But offset against that all I seemed to take away from the book was the behind the scenes cruelty and actually not just from the general public where you hear of animal neglect etc but I didn't like the ethics back then of the vets, their ethics and I found the descriptions of Harrods department store pet shops absolutely appalling and horrendous for such a famous shop.
This just didn't work for me and the situations narrated kind of haunt me and make me squirm.
I know and understand that it was a product of its time and that this kind of thing was the norm within the field but I still don't have to like it.
This was not my cup of tea being an animal lover and I found parts quite upsetting and shocking.
