How lovely to be reacquainted with the Bennett’s, Collins and Darcy families as well as Lady Catherine de. Bourgh and her daughter. This book carries on where Pride and Prejudice finished - with the marriages of the two oldest Bennet sisters and their meek friend, Charlotte Lucas. But it is Charlotte who is the undisputed heroine of this book. Charlotte married Reverend Collins when he was rejected by her best friend Elizabeth Bennet so that she would not be ‘left on the shelf’. During this story, she develops into a loving wife and mother and is admired by all. She remains a warm and sympathetic character despite her flaws.
The book describes matters which undoubtedly took place during the lifetime of Jane Austen but which, due to the sensibilities of the time, Austen would not have been able to write about - sex, adultery, miscarriages, child death, thwarting the laws of inheritance inheritance, love affairs cross dressing etc
This is a book about women and families where the males play only a minor part.
I loved it.
