This was such a lovely tale expanding on the story of Charlotte Lucas in Jane Austen's Pride and prejudice.
She is plain, poor, unmarried when it was a woman's lot to be wed.
The only way to change her circumstances is to marry and she chooses the clergyman Mr. Collins.
It's no great love match but she is happy enough until the tragic death of her son Tom.
Grieving she goes to visit her friend Elizabeth Bennet where she has feelings for a fellow guest.
How far will she take this attraction?
If she goes ahead with her feelings she could lose everything she holds dear in a society where women were subjugated and at the whims of their husband and good opinion of those around them.
A really lovely read and a great spin off addition to all the fiction relating to Austen, her characters and her world.
Definitely one for the author's fans and just general historical fiction devotees alike.
