"Christmas at War" delivers what it promises on the cover, first-hand accounts of people's Christmases during the Second World War. The memories are often poignant, sometimes funny and always interesting. The tales of making do with almost nothing to try and make Christmas as normal for children is very touching. The contributors to this book tell very similar stories to my mum's childhood memories of the war and the Christmases she shared with her family. Although I found the first chapter regarding the evacuation of children rather sad, the rest of the book resonates with a "make do and mend" attitude that I suppose the majority of the population adopted throughout these years.

The whole book is very well assembled, putting together these memories before that generation leaves us. Highly recommend this book.
