City of Spies follows our hero, Elisabeth, as she flees from Paris in June 1943. Her identity as a Special Operations Executive is near to being discovered with her cover story having been compromised. After some adventures with Alex, a downed RAF pilot along the way, she lands in Lisbon, the aforementioned City of Spies and takes on a new identity with orders to infiltrate the high society circle based in Lisbon and Estoril, reporting back any intelligence she gathers.

I really enjoyed this story. It was entertaining, easy to read and with enough pace to keep my pages turning. Drawing on some real events and historical figures at times it rang so true, other times it was less plausible but no less entertaining as a result. The unique position of Lisbon, a city port in a "neutral" country during World War 2 is fascinating. The author uses the setting well, drawing together a large cast of characters and plot details to keep Elisabeth busy. I also loved the ending! A great debut.
