The first time I read the extract of this book I was unsure whether this would be for me but after starting again I got to grip with the unusual poetry style writing with scatterings of Spanish interwoven, which even if you don’t fully understand seem to make sense and I found that I throughly enjoyed the read.

Although not my normal genre of book I found this a compelling read, it tugs on your heartstrings a moving story of tragedy, grief and loss and family secrets.

This story is of two girls from completely different backgrounds Camino Rios who lives in the Dominican Republic with her grandmother in relative poverty, but better off than her neighbours, who is insecure in her setting and lives in fear for her future. Yahaira Rios lives in New York with her mother and father and has class, privilege and a secure lifestyle and a well mapped out future.

The tragic death of their father brings out these painful family secrets and highlights the different life experiences and a coming together of feelings of anger, betrayal, grief and loss of dreams.

The title feels rather ironic and the book cover is intriguing and eye catching
