I really liked this book. I think this book will do a good job dealing with grief especially within teenagers and the loss of parent(s). Acevedo had done good job establishing the different lives of the two girls and their individual family situations. Story is centered on relationships, trusting yourself, and navigating family secrets. It’s loosely inspired by the real life tragedy of American Airlines flight 587, which crashed in Queens, New York route to the Dominican Republic in 2001, killing all 260 people on board, of which 90% were of Dominican descent. Two girls Camino and Yahaira are the same age and they share the same father. They have never heard of each other until a tragic accident when their Papi dies. This novel perfectly conveys every emotion of the girls: grief, anger, hurt and the faintest glint of hope of a sister they never knew they had. There’s a lot of pain to be felt in Clap When You Land but there’s so much love too.
