I was a bit dubious to start with from the extract as it was looking like a bit of a mushy one (i've never read Wilbur Smith before other than the biography one i won from this site a few months ago). But once that introduction to some of the characters was out of the way we were right into the action.

There's something about a world war 2 setting that just instantly adds atmosphere and drama, and even though it's a work of fiction you just know someone actually did something like this in real life. We're far enough away from the reality of the war that it seems like a work of fiction in and of itself. We have a successful sabotage attempt of a train track carrying what we are told were SS, followed by the escape of the female operative, who as she nears her rendezvous realises she isn't going to make it as she accidentally finds herself in a marsh instead of a path, and so her rescuer leaves without her as the Nazis make their presence known and capture our heroine.

What will become of her, the pace was relentless once the story got going, so i really hope it keeps up for the rest of the book, i need to know how she manages in captivity and how she must eventually get free.
