As historical thriller go this is right up there as one of the best plotted and action packed novels. It gives a fictionalised account of the creation of the Jamestown colony and the rigours and hardships that the settlers endured as well as the political scheming that occurred at home in England both in favour of and against the maintenance of the settlement.
It pits Prince Henry against his father King James through their respective intelligencers Christian Hardy and Robert Cecil. Hardy is sent by Prince Henry to protect the settlement from the both the scheming of Cecil and also the involvement of Spain who wants the settlement to fail as it threatens their own trade. Spain sends its own intelligencer in the form of the renegade Englishman Realm. Hardy and Realm have history, having opposed each other before and a clash is inevitable.
Added to the mix are historical figures such as Captain Smith, Pocahontas and Sir Walter Raleigh and you have a complex plot set within the religious and political turmoil of the time that both excites and entertains.
