As a huge fan of James Swallow's first Mark Dane adventure 'Nomad', I couldn't wait to get my hands on this follow-up novel. I am happy to report that it did not disappoint! In Exile, I got to know the Rubicon team much better, and see a relationship blossom between Lucy and Mark which was refreshing amongst all the conflict. In particular I found it fascinating to get into the mindset of Mark as he tried to balance his duty to Rubicon and also the need to stay within the limits of the law while carrying out testing missions. I was exhausted after reading about his endeavours and close-calls, so I can only imagine what Mark felt like in the middle of it all!

James Swallow's style of writing is refreshing and engaging, allowing the reader to keep on track with the different terrorist groups and criminal gangs while at the same time painting a bigger picture of the way Rubicon slotted into the mix. As this genre of book is usually not something I would choose to read, I am pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed Swallow's narrative and the way he introduces his readers into an unfamiliar world of crime and gang culture. I cannot wait to read the next novels about Mark Dane's future adventures, and accompany him on his journey as part of the Rubicon team!
