Thank you to Nosy Crow and Readers First for the advanced copy of Fledgling by Lucy Hope.

I loved this book, and I feel it can appeal to any age.

Cassie meets a little winged creature who she looks after with the help of her friend Raphael. Lucy Hope has a talent for rich descriptions which transport you to Cassie's world. I felt I was walking with Cassie in the forest, seeing the Sturmfalken through her eyes, sensing her fear and excitement, as well as breathing the stench of the evil creatures after her, the cherub and Raphael. I felt the chill and unease Cassie felt when she discovered that the owls had moved in the owlery.

It is not often I am taken by surprise in a book, but I am pleased to say that there is a little twist in this story. Tears welled up but it meant that there was a greater understanding and sense of compassion for the respective characters.

As much as I'd love to know what happens next, I'd be happy if this is a stand alone book. I am also looking forward to reading more from Lucy Hope.
