Fledgling tells the story of Cassie after a magical little cherub is suddenly swept into her unique life. Cassie lives with her family in what sounds like a rather unique house. The description of the house gave me 'road dahl' vibes but in this novel the description of the 'contraption' of a house did not quite meet that high quality of storytelling. As a result I didn't quite understand what the house was supposed to look like. The author could have done with a bit more time describing what is clearly supposed to be a unique house.

Fledgling felt like a more gothic, dark kind of novel with the introduction of cherubs, stuffed owls and dark creatures in the night. It will be liked by those who believe in cherubs, myths, superstition and those with a good imagination. The front cover matched this vibe.

The problem I had with this novel is that halfway through it felt like it was going nowhere. The story did start to have some twists and turns towards the end but I'd gotten so bored as to what the cherubs purpose was I wasn't as excited by them as I believe the author intended.

This book was a very quick read and I felt like I had to stick with it in order to find out the ending. Even with the twists and turns I was deflated at the end.

I give this novel three stars as children may not need a deeper meaning for the cherub and will be able to swiftly read to the end. However there are plenty of children's novels that can entertain adults too but sadly for me this was not one of them.
