A shocking first hand account of the Kurdish fighter’s war against Daesh. Written by Joanna Palini, a fighter in the womens protection units, the YPJ.
The story engages you immediately, bringing a vivid image of the appalling conditions that they endured during their “Stalingrad”. To see how they they formed small groups and fought for the lives of their comrades and the local residents. The sacrifices they all made to protect ordinary people from Daesh is remarkable.

The treachery of the Turkish, blocking the aid to the Kurds. The failure of the west to support their war, the failure of the media to represent their side of the story, the failure of justice in imprisoning Joanna.

It’s not often that I’m lost for words, but this book puts our privileged lives into context and presents a broader image, showing us the suffering that has occurred beneath the cloak of censorship.

I would like to read more, not just because this is a well written book, but because I would like to see that the suffering had a reason, that it was not all in vain. These 30 pages have moved me.
