This is a pacey well written novel based in the Cold War era and fictionalising the hero, Chief Superintendent Troy of the Murder Squad in Scotland Yard, and his interactions with the defector Guy Burgess. This is a tale of betrayal, murder, espionage, love and loyalty set in the privileged strata of society including peers and politicians. Life seems to be very different now compared to then and this I think reflects the era very evocatively.
This is not a book I would normally have chosen although I enjoy thrillers and I would have avoided this subject matter but I have been agreeably surprised by how much I enjoyed the book. This is well worth reading even if it is outside your normal genre.
