The novel is set in Sweden and revolves around Sweden’s involvement in the cold war but told primarily from the current day. The main characters are Agneta, who shoots her husband, Stellan, dead in the first chapter and Sara, a police woman, who used to play with Agneta’s daughters when she was younger.
I don’t wish to give too much of the story line away other than to say it is faced paced, almost to the point of taking your breath away. I wish I had a better knowledge of the cold war and that time in history as I felt myself getting a little lost at times, but that is in no way a criticism of the author’s writing. The amount of research he must have carried out to write such a novel must have been immense. The author has done an excellent job in taking this knowledge and making an engrossing novel that shows how the effects of the cold war had a far longer reach than may have been appreciated.
The characters are very strong, particularly Sara, and the plot engaging, clever and unpredictable. An accomplished novel from a very talented writer.
