You can't help but be drawn to certain characters, and I've had that experience with the Gogartys. I didn't love them, and I didn't hate them, but I was immediately involved enough in them to want to know what was going on in their lives. Maybe I just needed to be reminded that every family has nice, bad, ugly, and insane moments, and we're all just trying to make ends meet, right?
I believe that the characters knew more about each other during the novel, and that first impressions of an individual aren't necessarily accurate, even though you think you know them well. There is still something to learn and experience about someone because we all have feelings of stagnation, fear, and insecurity at various points of our lives.
