Abigail (Abi) Sorensen is nearly 36, a former lawyer, the owner/manager of a café in Sydney and the mum of four-year-old Oscar. Ever since she was 15 years old, Abi has been receiving letters in the mail from people called Rufus and Isabelle with random chapters from a self-help book called The Guidebook. She's now been invited to an all-expenses-paid retreat at Taylors Island in Bass Strait, South Australia to learn the truth about the book. Intriguing!

The idea all sounds rather strange and Abe is brave to go somewhere she's never been before, especially as she doesn't know what it all entails. Her mum, who is looking after Oscar, is worried that's she joined a cult or is going to be sold into slavery or made to be a drug mule!

We learn from the cover blurb that Abi's brother went missing the day before her 16th birthday so I wonder if this has any connection with the chapters from The Guidebook.

I like the writing in this book – it's lovely and descriptive and rather quirky and amusing. I also like Abi's take on people. I'm interested in finding out more about the story and the letters, and why Abi was being sent them for all those years.

I quite like the cover with the origami bird on the cover. It's a bit chick-lit looking but this book seems to have more depth.
