I absolutely loved Uzma Jalaluddin's debut novel 'Ayesha At Last', which was a retelling of the 'Pride and Prejudice' story by Jane Austen, but set in a Muslim community in Toronto. This latest book is another retelling of sorts, but this time based on a film - 'You've Got Mail' which starred Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. 'Hana Khan Carries on' moves the story into two competing restaurants. Hana works as a waitresses but her real dream is to tell stories on the radio. She satisfies her ambitions with a podcast and begins to make a connection with one of her listeners.
This is a book that stirs you up, although sounding perhaps a little 'fluffy' from the blurb, this is far from it, there's plenty of substance to hold it together. With a cast of contrasting characters there's never really a dull moment, and the hate crime adds another dimension for the reader to reflect upon. A decent romance at the core and a heartwarming overall feel.
