I was drawn into this story straight away; two young girls, a generation apart. They clearly both have difficult mothers but their voices are strong despite their innocence and the hardships they must have faced so soon in their lives. I couldn't help but hope the story will be kind to them, but could tell straight away that this probably would not be the case. But this only makes for a more compelling novel.
I wasn't too keen on the cover, and it speaks to me of happier times somehow, and further in the past than the setting of the book so far.
