Amir Azadi is eighteen years old, gay and Muslim. He is worried about coming out to his family, convinced that they will disown him. Hoping to avoid the issue for as long as possible he plans to go to college far away and live his real life there. Unfortunately for Amir, someone in his high school has decided to blackmail him (basically: "Pay up or I'll tell your parents that you are gay"). Amir deals with this situation by running away, ending up in Rome, where he spends the summer finding himself.
When his old life catches up with him he finds himself in an airport interrogation room explaining how he got there, and why things got so messy.
This is a coming of age drama with extra twists, which the author Arvin Ahmadi, has based on his own true story. The writing is authentic and you feel like you are sitting in the room with Amir as he tells his story. A must read YA novel, which with its honesty will no doubt help others in similar situations.
