This is a great tale that really took hold of me and, even though I found the fact that the main character ended up in Rome a bit unbelievable, once the descriptions started flowing of the neighbourhoods and people etc, I was back into it again.
The characters were a variety of nice, busy, relaxed and very friendly. The bonding and speed of the friendship group were a distinct hint at how desperate the main character was to be accepted and how lost he actually was. Full throttle and very trusting.
I am not aware at all, and do not pretend to be at all knowledgeable, about the amount of embarrassment that the sexuality of the main character would cause as you do not like to think that that sort of negative thinking still goes on. But clearly in different parts of the world and with different religions it still proves to be an issue.
