The first page sets the scene of Christmas eve, putting the reader in a festive spirit. You feel as though you are in the shop with the family getting ready for Christmas.
Jo feels lost, her job isn't what she expected, her parents are selling the shop that she grew up in, and her parents seem to know more about her old friends than she does.
Tessa also feels lost, still a stranger to everyone in her town even though she has lived there for decades, and a dark hole in her life, since the death of her sister.
These women seem to be hiding parts of their lives that they would rather forget. I'm rooting for these women and hoping that they find themselves and their place in the world.
