How To Belong starts with two very different stories, the first is Jo, whose parents have a butcher's shop in the Forest of Dean. It's almost Christmas and Jo, a barrister in London, is home for the holidays and is helping out in her parents' shop. This is their last Christmas in the shop as they've decided to retire although the sale of the shop fell through there is someone else interested. Sarah Franklin next introduces her readers to Tessa, the local farrier. Unlike Jo who has a loving family Tessa is on her own and not enjoying the festive season. Tessa is also troubled by sudden unexplained periods when all her muscles lose power and these episodes are becoming more and more frequent leaving her extremely worried that, still in her forties, she might have to go into a care home if it gets worse. Christmas is a wonderful time for many but not for all. It's going to be very interesting to find out if Sarah Franklin can conjure up some Christmas magic for Tessa and Jo.
