A story of two different women
Jo was a barrister but gives it all up to start running the family butchers shop. Her story highlights the way people don’t always tell the whole truth. She starts helping her parents in the shop in the run up to Christmas and the interaction with regular customers reinforces her decision not to allow the family business to cease. Her part of the book charts her struggles to make the business successful.
The other part of the story is about a farrier Tessa who is worried her health will stop her working. Needing more money Tessa rents her spare room to Jo.
The novel is beautifully written and offers insights into living in the forest and in a small community and the difficulties of working women struggling with new businesses and sickness. I enjoyed the first part of the book but found the ending quite abrupt and perhaps not fully finished.
