This book tells the story of Ria who manages SafeMe, a refuge for abused families. During the month timespan of the story, the future funding of the refuge is in doubt. Ria’s husband, Danny, has gone to work abroad for a month, so Ria and her 2 children are alone when she starts to get threatening messages and pictures.
The story is interspersed with diary entries from Tanya who is being kept isolated and completely controlled by Alan. Until the last few pages, it is not clear how Ria and Tanya are connected.
Ria is referred to as a ‘superwoman’ but I didn’t warm to her character at all.
I found the writing dull and uninspiring.
I also found the gratuitous bad language and many typos distracting and the frequent insipid and meaningless texts between Danny and Ria made me want to stick 2 fingers down my throat!
Whilst I accept that domestic violence needs more publicity and this author is well qualified to do that, I don’t think this book is going to make much of a difference.
