I finally got around to reading this book and I am sorry I didn't pick it up sooner. It's a tale of historical fiction set in New York in 1803. I haven't read Paddy Hirsch's previous book about the adventures of Justy and Kerry but it's not essential to understand this story.
A young girl is brutally murdered and Justy is on the case to track her killer down. In doing so he uncovers a large web of deceit, corruption, kidnapping, violence and much more. As is often the case in society the very wealthy are shown to be the most morally corrupt characters capable of despicable deeds while the poorest slaves are the most decent by being selfless and showing compassion for others.
Although Justy and Kerry are the main characters I must admit that Hardluck and Lars are my favourites.
