I really enjoyed this excellent memoir / trip down the food memory lane and the changing face of food shopping. As a person of around the same age as Grace so much of the detail of childhood eating and the worship of the ready-meal brought back vivid memories and made me laugh out loud as well as pine a little for how things used to be. Grace Dent always seems a likeable character in her media appearances and she is an enjoyable companion in book form too. The amiable nostalgia in the book is offset by the emotional reality of caring for ageing parents and particularly the decline caused by her father’s dementia. It can be hard to read and depressingly familiar for many but is always sensitively handled by Dent and often uplifting in how things can bind a family together - in this case food. I enjoyed Hungry greatly and would recommend it particularly to anybody who already enjoys the author's TV or newspaper works.
