Emma Sky writes with admirable fervour about her travels in the Middle East: Egypt. Iraq, Syria, Afganistan,... Oh, the places she has been!

But this isn't a recount of her travels, but a canvassing of the political landscape. The Middle East is forever changing: I remember compiling maps to put the region in perspective, and the maps were all noticeably different. Every nation has left her mark on the region, every leader has changed something. It's a region with a complex history: Emma Sky's pursuit to help a reader understand the trials of the East is truly a noble one.

A Western reader can't always understand the backwards, regressive nature of some of the policies -the systems- but compared to what was, it's rather astounding! This looks to be anengaging read: it's true, the Middle East has values which are rooted in belonging, tribalism and they cherish community. There is a necessary, often beautiful, story to tell.
