I love fantasy novels and was certainly not disappointed by Alexandra Christo's 'Into The Crooked Place' set in a world where new magic cannot be created and old charms are sold on the black market. The book follows a number of characters all involved in some way in the magical underworld. Each one of them has their own motive to change their world but they can't do it alone.

The characterisation within the novel is excellent and every character has their flaws as well as redeeming features and their relationships with each other are often unexpected but not unbelievable. Even the worst of the characters is endearing in their own way.

Although there are dark points within the novel it is appropriate for young adult readers and the pacing and action is more suited to this audience. I found the book enjoyable but I would really want more depth to the fantasy world in the first book of a series.

The story was left on a cliff-hanger and I must admit that even though I found the story-line more suitable for younger readers I do want to know what happens to the characters and the world they live in! If this had been written when I was a young adult I would have loved it and been desperate for the next installment. I would recommend it to young readers who love escaping into a fantasy world.
