There are multiple twists and some hectic violence in this action-filled story. I was gripped from the beginning but I did keep hoping the pace would slow down a little so there'd be a chance to understand the world I found myself plunged into. But it never happened so I was left bemused by the magic, the technology, the history, the diverse people and the power struggle. I thought the reason must be that this is a sequel to a popular scene-setting introduction to this amazing world. I promised myself I'd read the first book and sort it all out.

However, there is no introduction; on the contrary, this is the first of a planned two volume series. I assume the answer lies in me - I don't fit the YA market.

This is Terry Pratchett without the footnotes and the wit but with the enthusiasm and vivid imagination. The characters do jump out at you and are excellently described without belabouring the point. There are intricate relationships and history between them, perhaps the finest aspect of this novel.
