I have to admit that I went in to this book tainted by the memory of The Dark Lake, a book that did not live up to my expectations. Sadly this one seems to be following the same tired old cliches with a very damaged Police Officer as our hero; or in this case heroine. I want to like Gemma but I just can't, I just want to shake her and tell her to pull herself together. I am sure I am missing out on all sorts of psychological nuances but she drives me potty. Sadly, she has not developed much as a character since the first book.

As the First Impression segment only really gives us the bare bones of the murder I can't really tell if that will lift the book but somehow I fear that it will mostly be about Gemma's state of perennial confusion and self hate.
