Well constructed story about the parents, staff and children at a school in Cooney, Cork.
The machinations the ambitious parents go through in order to secure their 12 year old children a part in the forthcoming school musical, which is to be televised, are amusingly told and totally believable. But there are darker things going on in the community, both in the present and in the past - internet grooming, homophobia and a conspiracy to evade the truth about a fatal car crash. And, of course, there is the batty neighbour who steals peoples cats, dyes their coats and feeds them to death.
The narrative is quirky and addictive. The reader just has to keep reading to find out what really happened and how the characters lives are resolved.
A light, quick, amusing story about life in small town Ireland with all the typical wit I expected after reading two of Eithne Shortall’s previous books.
