In the past few years Michael Ridpath has come out of nowhere and is now one of the authors I most look forward to hearing from.

The Ice and Fire series (detective novels set in Iceland) were the cause of this ascension in my own personal league table, but this is a worthy follow-up.

We meet a family with secrets, the patriarch served on a nuclear submarine and ended his career under mysterious circumstances, children with more modern things to hide.

At thanksgiving, a journalist appears who is investigating past nuclear incidents and he knows a lot about what was thought to be hidden in the past. So when he dies and the family seem to be involved we get two conundrums to solve, one played out in flashback one in current time.

This story is brilliantly constructed and well worth your time and money.
