An enjoyable read, but didn't quite live up to expectations

I was really looking forward to reading "Love Will Tear Us Apart," and on the whole this was quite an engrossing and enjoyable read. Unfortunately it didn't quite live up to my expectations, after reading the first impression.

I loved the parts of the novel which covered the early years when Paul and Kate met as children, and where their friendship blossomed. This was quite a nostalgic read, and their friendship (despite their different backgrounds and upbringing) was quite charming. I loved Paul and his family, but would have liked to hear more about Kate's parents: I felt that their story was glossed over somewhat and I really would have liked to learn about them in more detail.

However, where the story came apart for me was the disappointing revelation about "the letter." I was expecting something more explosive, so I was quite underwhelmed when the secret was revealed, although the situation in which the revelation was presented was quite exciting. This novel is well written and, despite the above, I did enjoy it. Just not as much as I thought I would.
