Another masterpiece by Ruth Hogan with the distinctive beautiful cover which has become a trademark for her books.
Madame Burova is the story about Billie, who is at a crossroads in her life and decides to try and trace her birth parents. The story alternates between the current time and Brighton in the 1970s. The sense of time is perfectly described bringing back reminders of the racial and sexual discrimination of the time as well as memories of the culture - pop stars, holiday camps and Spangles!
Imelda Burova is a wonderful character and, whether the reader believes in palmistry and Tarot reading or not doesn’t really matter to her sensitive and important role in Billie’s life.
There are so many lovely characters (and dogs) plus one or two horrible ones.
I think I am now a committed fan of Ruth Hogan’s writing. I feel the need to re-read her earlier books now that I have finished Madame Burova.
