I was surprised to get a children’s book as a sample read and it was a real treat. I read this book with my ten year old and it felt like the right level for him. I have read a few stories set during the pandemic and wasn’t sure but I felt the warmth of the characters in Max’s family and really enjoyed it.

The story is set at the start of the COVID pandemic in 2020 and really captures the feel but in a positive way. So easily we forget a trip to the supermarket to see the shelves emptied by the panic buying public, a real shift in normality for everyone. The shock and emotions of school closures and a different way of living amongst the unknown through the eyes of Max. He starts a challenge - to count to a million, and the story threads through family, friends, neighbours and everything around him. You really do start to like Max and his heart warming story.
