"Max Counts to a Million" by Jeremy Williams is a book written primarily for children. As a grandmother I absolutely loved it, and very much look forward to reading it to my grandson when he is old enough to appreciate it.

Max (just Max, definitely not Maximillian, Maximus or Maxwell) is just eight years old when the coronavirus reaches England. His parents try to shield him from the increasingly worrying pandemic. But he is clearly worried. Having been sent to his bedroom to count to one hundred (as a result of a tantrum - his parents' normal response) he decides that he will count to a million instead. He has no idea how long it will take him, as he had no concept of how large a number a million is. He almost gives up at 500,000, but comments from friends, family and neighbours eventually inspire him to carry on. The story chronicles his determination to succeed.

This is such a wonderfully-written book, with lovely illustrations. It is full of humour and one which I can thoroughly recommend even though I am so much older than the target audience. A brilliant read.
