Sisters Martha and Willow want to get their mother to sell the family house named Anchor House in the idyllic seaside town of Tilsham. After their dad died a few years ago, they think their mother (Naomi) should sell up and move closer to them in Surrey. Well it's more Martha's idea really, she thinks that when she has her own family her mum would be better placed to be living nearer her daughters and she could also step into helping with childcare duties. But Martha has her own personal problems, she would love so desperately to become pregnant but it just isn't happening. Willow at present is house sitting for two of her friends, who are spending a year of freedom travelling before starting a family, she has no problems to worry about, except coping with two siamese cats, whom Rick, Willows partner seems to detest. Rick is also a strange person towards Willow, causing her untold miseries, almost each and every day. Naomi has one big reason why she doesn't want to move away and that's Ellis, he was on the scene years ago, when they were both at university together and later on before Martha was born. Now Ellis is back and a big part in Naomi's life again. When Naomi suggests a meeting with Ellis, Martha is very distraught and can't cope mentally with this new situation in her life, Willow is a bit more easy going about the whole situation, but as you read through this book you find you are thinking about the relationship between Naomi and her daughters, and find yourself wondering is there some deep rooted problem?
A tale of family angst, sisterhood and sisterly rivalry, jealousy and wanting things to go back to how they were before. A time before Ellis, a time when for Martha and Willow it was just their mother. But are they seeing their childhood through rose tinted glasses? Will Naomi have to make a difficult decision, who will she put first? Will the two sisters find happiness in their lives?
This book covers some sensitive subjects that some readers may feel uncomfortable reading about, but I think it is done with sensitivity and it does add considerably to the storyline.
I have loved every book by Erica James that I have read and this one is no exception. It has strong female characters, which it definitely needs and you find yourself rooting for each one of them. I think that it's deserves to be a book that gets people talking and taking some action in their lives, indeed it is very much a thought provoking family drama, all wrapped up in this great book.
A well deserved 5 star read from me.
