While waiting at an airport an author runs into an old school pal.
They start chatting and catching up.
Jeff in conversation tells his writer friend of how one day he did something heroic, a good deed.
He saved a drowning man but then Jeff started getting curious about who he had saved and did a little detective work of his own and found that the man in the water runs an art gallery.
Jeff inveigles a job there hoping for a bit of recognition but what he finds is that his "rescue" is quite a bad, devious man.
A crook and a swindler and a womanising cheat.
Jeff now questions whether what he did that day was right or wrong and whether the world wouldn't be better off without Francis Arsenault in it.
But Jeff is in so deep with his job at the gallery and with Francis that he doesn't know how to escape and it becomes a battle of wills between Francis and Jeff.
A clever novel that makes us question our every action little and large and it's consequence whether good or bad.
