I wasnt really sure what to make of this book before starting it. The cover doesn't give anything away and nor does the blurb!
It's set in an airport first-class lounge. During a delay, our narrator sees an old college acquaintance, Jeff. At first he thinks Jeff won't remember him, but he does and starts on a long description of the most important thing to happen to him since leaving college.
Whilst at the beach, he sees a man drowning. After some hesitation, he rescues the swimmer and performs cpr. When help arrives, Jeff finds himself disgruntled that he receives no thanks, or acknowledgement from the man who's life he saved. Jeff becomes obsessed with the mystery man and manages to track him down, somehow becoming entwined in his business and personal life whilst still undercover.
There is a somewhat shocking end to this tale, but not a lot else happens. That not to say that this is a boring book! On the contrary, I found myself whizzing through its short chapters, wondering what Jeff would get up to next and what conclusion the story would come to. At its heart I think this is a story about decision making and the butterfly effect. What one small action, thought or sentence can have on our lives and how that ripples out to those around us. A very enjoyable short read!
