I've always enjoyed La Plante books especially those featuring Jane Tennison. This book didn't disappoint. Set in early 1979 the period of discontent sees Jane newly promoted to Sergeant and the reader quickly pictures the scene with black bin bags piling up due to strikes. Jane is sent to the first victim and the writer describes the scene in great detail again allowing you to clearly visualise the market area and the body. When the DCI arrives I could real the clear discrimination he had against Jane, a female. The DI arrives and there is a light hearted moment as he'd been gigging with his band the previous night and was still in his Camden Town gear. The author moves to a briefing when Jane addresses 30 detectives and uniformed officers but is interrupted by an older male "You really a DS, love" he asks. The DI backs Jane up. The book then moves to the mortuary and eventually to Jane going home for some sleep before being woken twice. I felt the scene was well and truly set at the end of Chapter 2 leaving me desperate to read the rest of the book. Well Done La Plante, yet again.
