I think this book is a more suitable book for a young, black, American reader. I am old, white and English and didn’t really identify with the characters or their language. I would probably have been attracted by the title and cover into picking it up and reading the précis inside the front cover but would not interested enough to buy or borrow the book to read the whole thing.
Have just read the First Impression again and completely changed my mind. I would like to find out how the lives of the main characters evolve and have put it on my list of books to be read.
