syria is in the middle of a civil war and Hadi is in the united states of america as a sponsored refugee escaping all the troubles. He got to the USA after escaping a prison in syria, being held for two years. But he now has a new problem. His father has died in syria and he needs to get back there urgently to arrange his father's funeral. But he cannot wait for a legal visa. he decides just to get on an aeroplane and fly out there regardless. Then he gets back on a plane to go back to the united states not realising there is more trouble to come. Because he left illegally he now has no papers to re-enter america.
Sami is another syrian character who is in america as she has gained a scholership to harvard. it is in the usa that she met Hadi and they began their relationship. Now i seems she is pregant and her and Hadi are delighted. Until one day sami goes into early labour, Hadi is not around and she has to go through things alone. The story follows the two and their relationship whilst they are both separated in different countries and Hadi's fight to get back to his wife
