Heart wrenching story and magnificently written. It manages to capture the essence of tragedy, hope and the magnanimous shortfallings of modern day society and political absurdity. The start has hadi returning from his fathers funeral, but despite having a visa, he is forced in immediate deportation due to a change in the law and the horrendous consequences that the effect the american law had in regards to penalising refugees. Sami, is hadi’s wife and she is separated at the airport from hadi, and she is prematurely giving birth to their child. As she is rushed to hospital, she is oblivious to the plight of her husband and the desperation he is now embarking on in his efforts to not get deported. The book flickers elegantly from the before they were married, the hope and joy that their new lives promised, that was so suddenly ripped away again. The past horrors of Syrian war is strewn and threaded, adding the sadness and can only make you feel sickened at the inhumanity of the situation. An epic perspective to enlighten us to the plight of people that are trying to survive a circumstance that is completely beyond their control.
