This is a great story of our times, and of all times when people are displaced. There are huge movements of people, how many millions? Everywhere they move, there is paperwork, impenetrable bureaucracy, obstruction, fear, dislike, distrust and rejection, and for the refugee, no way home. "No Land to Light On" and the cover introduce you to the bird migration theme that cleverly weaves through the book. This is a love story, Hadi and Sama meet and marry, and are mercilessly split apart by the USA's heartless policy to Syrian refugees. Yes, it is a love story, but so much more. It is of now - Syrian refugees and the collapse of that country, but it also shines a spotlight on the perennial plight of the debasing struggle of ordinary people trying to find peace and a life. Yara Zgheib has managed to subtly and brilliantly portray mankind's ability to endure and keep going. This is a very good book, I have only two (very faint) criticisms, the chapters keep switching from "before" to "now" which can be tiring and the staccato style of dialogue can be a little bit disjointed, but I still give it 5 stars.
