The central characters in No Land To Light On are Hadi and Sama, two Syrians who have settled in the US although Sama arrived a few years before Hadi. Sama meets Hadi shortly after his arrival and the two marry. At the time Sama is expecting their first child Hadi's father dies. His parents have been in Jordan awaiting a visa for entry to the US. Hadi goes to Jordan for his father's funeral but is denied reentry to the US as the rules have changed. Yara Zgheib writes very movingly about the emotions the couple experience as they try to be reunited. Throughout the book there are references to the migration of birds and the need for them to have a land to light on during and at the end of their journey, an apt comparison which adds to the pathos. No Land To Light On is especially relevant at the moment with the war in Ukraine and so many of the country's people seeking refuge in other countries.
