This book was a heartbreaking story of a couple's life being turned upside down due to an ill-thought out law introduced overnight.

The book covers the very different stories of Hadi and Sama, who were both Syrian and both ended up in America - Hadi as a refugee and Sama as a student.

When Hadi travels to Jordan for his father's funeral it was meant to be a short trip, but the travel ban on Syrians was introduced meaning he was unable to get home to Sama despite having a visa and refugee status.

Sama is left alone with a premature baby, and Hadi is deported to Jordan where he has 50 days on his visa to try to return to America.

The plot is simple but is written in such a lyrical way as to be beautiful. The sentences are short, and staccato as human though actually is. The emotions both Sama and Hadi are feeling are clear and despite the subject matter it is a page turner.

An important human story.
