This is a well- researched and well written spy thriller that builds on characters first introduced in an earlier book.
I have not read the earlier book and thought that this may get in the way of my enjoyment of this book. I am glad to say that I was wrong as the characters are well drawn and the plotline so full of twists and turns that I was soon drawn into the story and my attention was kept throughout. I think that as it covers 1939 which was a dark and anxious time of our history helped as the plot deals with the threat from Nazi Germany as well as their treatment of the Jews and the arrival of the Kindertransport. The main plot focuses on the race for the atom bomb and it was interesting to learn just how recent developments in relation to the atom were in 1939.It also helped that the there was no presumption that the reader had read the previous book and so I was able to enjoy it as a self-contained story.
The book also benefits from the authors attention to detail in setting out the nuts and bolts of life in Cambridge in 1939 and this includes little details such as the difficulties of phoning overseas and the use of telegrams.
I would definitely read other books by this author.
